I’ll be working with any interested cub scouts on earning their Wild Life Conservation belt loops and/or pins during the month of March. Anyone interested in participating, see or call Shelly for help.
Requirements for the Wildlife Conservation Belt Loop
- Explain what natural resources are and why it’s important to protect and conserve them.
- Make a poster that shows and explains the food chain. Describe to your den what happens if the food chain becomes broken or damaged.
- Learn about an endangered species. Make a report to your den that includes a picture, how the species came to be endangered, and what is being done to save it.
Requirements for the Wildlife Conservation Pin
Earn the Wildlife Conservation belt loop, and complete five of the following requirements:
- Visit a wildlife sanctuary, nature center, or fish hatchery.
- Collect and read five newspaper or magazine articles that discuss conservation of wildlife and report to your family or den what you learn.
- Learn about five animals that use camouflage to protect themselves.
- Make a birdbath and keep a record for one week of the different birds that visit it.
- Make a collage of animals that are in the same class: fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, or mammals.
- Make a plaster cast of an animal track. Show it to your den.
- Visit with a person who works in wildlife conservation, such as a park ranger, biologist, range manager, geologist, horticulturist, zookeeper, fishery technician, or conservation officer.
- Visit a state park or national park.
- Participate in an environmental service project that helps maintain habitat for wildlife, such as cleaning up an area or planting trees.
Wildlife Conservation Worksheet
ANY WEBELO SCOUT PLANNING TO ATTEND NEEDS TO CONTACT SHELLY THIS WEEK. Overnight camping is not required, but highly encouraged.
Webelos Woods is an adventure designed to introduce Webelos Scouts and their parents to the exciting Scouting adventures ahead and help make the transition into Boy Scouting exciting. The weekend is filled with fun activities, intriguing demonstrations, and plenty of outdoor excitement.
Scouts will learn about the traditions and adventures of Longhorn Council summer camps and meet many of the summer camp staff. The event is hosted by the leaders of Troop 520 and experienced Scouters from around the Longhorn Council.
Scouts and their parents are invited to participate as individuals or with their den. The cost of the event is $20 per person which includes a colorful event patch, program supplies, insurance, and dinner on Saturday evening. Dens and individuals must provide their own tents and meals for Saturday lunch and Sunday breakfast. Any Webelos scout and adult from any pack may attend either or all weekends.
Check-in begins at 7am on Saturday with activities beginning with an opening ceremony at 9am. Webelos Woods wraps up Sunday after Chapel Services at 10:30 am. Registration by dens is encouraged; however, individual registrations will be accepted.
We need to vote/choose on which one we want to attend. February 21/22 at Camp Tahuaya (near Temple) or March 7/8 at SR2 in Jacksboro, or March 28/29 at Worth Ranch.
It’s $20 a head, adults and children. Camping is not required, but highly encouraged. Lots of requirements will be covered over the weekend. Please help your sons to do chores between now and then to help earn his way. It will help fulfill part of the Citizen belt loop, and Family Member. Keep a chart!
All cub scouts interested in participating in Cub-O 2009 need to let Chris, Kay or Shelly know pronto! Cost is $15 for each scout and adult who attends. Two adults must be with each team of 3 to 6 boys. All adults after the first two are $5 (for lunch and insurance only). Anyone want to participate in the entire weekend, cost is $15 and includes maps, lunch, and patch. T-shirts must be purchased separately and cost $10.
Last day to register for the $15 entry fee is 12/30. After that, the fee rises to $20.
This is a rain or shine event, so pack ready.
The pack meeting on November 24 will be from 6:30 - 7:30 at FBC Perrin. Deputy Sheriff Darrell Self will be present to talk about crime prevention and there will be fun activities for all. Bear parents are in charge of snacks. Please contact Kay about what you will bring. Also, all popcorn money is due at pack meeting. Parents and siblings are encouraged to attend meeting. Dens with at least one parent in attendance will receive special award.
Webelos need to bring their Badge books and Webelos books to the den meeting on Monday. We’re going to finish up any requirements left on Citizen, Readyman and Fitness. Be sure to finish up your PSA poster for the den meeting. If you’re not done, we can work on it during the den meeting and you can present it to the pack.
Tuesday is the Veteran’s Day program at school. Any scouts in full dress uniform will be able to participate in the flag ceremony at the beginning of the ceremony. Please wear complete uniform to school.
Leaders, read through the books to mark this off. It is a requirement for both Wolves and Bears.
Webelo 1’s will be finishing up any last minute requirements for Citizen and Readyman that the boys have not yet finished. We didn’t get done at the pack meeting all that we had planned, so we’ll finish it up during the den meeting.
Bring your books, uniforms, and be sure to memorize your Scout Oath. There’s a coin for a prize….and…I have something else up my sleeve!
Get ready for Readyman. Here is the link to the Readyman Worksheet. Please prepare for Readyman by talking with your parent/kids about the Courage Character Connection. We will be discussing various first aid scenarios at the den meetings.
UPDATED!
I am in East Texas with my mother this week, and will not make it to the den meeting tomorrow. She is in the very final stages of her battle with cancer and her husband cannot take care of her alone.
I need to rely on my Den Chief and Denner to keep activities flowing until Ms. Boyd can make it to the school. Eric, it’s your time to shine my friend! Please practice the flag ceremony too! Attached is the Den Meeting Worksheet for October 13.
For homework, the boys can work on the Emergency Preparedness Award. Mainly the Family Emergency Kit. I’d like to display this or a first aid kit at the pack meeting.
Emergency Preparedness Award - Webelos Scout Requirements
- Earn the Readyman activity badge from the community badge group.
- Build a family emergency kit, with an adult family member participating in the project. Attached is an Emergency Kit Checklist to help.
- With your parent or guardian’s help, complete one of the following that you have not already completed for this award as a Tiger Cub or Wolf or Bear Cub Scout:
- Take a first aid course conducted by your local American Red Cross chapter.
- Give a presentation to your den on preparing for emergencies.
- Organize a training program for your Webelos den on stranger awareness, Internet safety, or safety at home.
IF THEY HAVE NOT DONE SO, PLEASE ENCOURAGE THE BOYS TO FINISH THEIR CITIZEN. They will not be able to earn their Webelos patch without it.
Homework to do after Den Meeting:
- Do a Good Turn every day
- Practice 1st Aid on Mom and Dad
- Prepare your den training program for Emergency Preparedness. Contact den leader when ready.
